Hoop Mountain Showcases Local Talent
Greg Kristof of Hoop Mountain in conjunction with Island Garden ran
the New York Super Summer Showcase for 120 potential college student
athletes.
The sidelines were filled with many college coaches. Mostly DII and
III, along with some low DI schools, as they were given a nice
opportunity to see a large selection of players. The camp started with
drills and then a constant stream of games for 3 hours. It was a
nicely run well organized event . The drills ran into games and each
game easily moved to the next one. The hoop mountain staff was on top
of everything so there was no waiting around for coaches to see the
talent.
With a handful of D I coaches there; 3 players caught our eye as
worthy of D 1 looks. Especially when you factor in 2 of the 3 are 2010
hopefuls.
Jonathan Moore a 6'5" 180 pound small forward from Brentwood H S on Long
Island was the most impressive. He twice corralled rebounds and went the
length of the floor finishing with thunderous dunks in transition with
defenders on his back. He also displayed a quick first step. He is a
slasher who gets to the basket and can finish in traffic. Needs to work
on his strength and perimeter shot. But as a rising junior he is a
player for D 1 to keep an eye on. Jonathan told us he has received
interest from St John’s and Penn State.
Rexton Gordon jr. from St Anthony’s on Long Island also displayed a
knack for getting to the basket. Rex also a member of the 2010 class.
He showed a very good handle . Which would make him interesting to low
D1 programs with his size at 6”3 . He needs to work though on his
perimeter game . A player who plays in a very structured H S program
will be worth as look as a combo guard . Schools from the Ivy and
Patriot as well as America East should be watching.
The old man of the impressive group is a 2009 prospect. Daniel DeVietri
a 6”4 shooter from Chaminade H S on Long Island . Daniel who had a very
good season in leading Chaminade to the State quarter finals can flat
out shoot the ball . on a H S team that runs a flex style offense
Daniel comes off of a lot of screens ready to shoot the ball. He as
been told by college coaches that they like his court vision and he has
a high basketball I Q. He would like to get a little stronger with his
handle and body. He has been offered the chance to play at Wake
Forest as a preferred walk on for 2009 with the hope of getting a 2010
scholarship . Assistant Coach Mike Muse as been in contact with
Daniel. He has also visited Davidson . With Coach McKillop Long Island
roots he having coached in the league where Daniel plays could be a
choice for Daniel. He would play well in their system. Also Bucknell,
Navy, Colgate, Lehigh, Lafayette, Cornell, Columbia, Dartmouth and
Quinnipiac have all been in regular contact with him.
All in all Hoop Mountain showed off some basketball talent as well as
showing off there ability to run a very helpful and thorough event.
